HOLZBILD-HAPTIK: Das Besondere an der vergangen Ära der Märchen-Holzbilder ist die Tatsache, dass die Figuren zwar dünn, aber dennoch kompakt und solide waren. Auf Holz gemalt oder auf Holz gedruckt, aber in jeden Fall so, dass man etwas Festes in den Händen hielt. Das ist der große Unterschied zu einer Kinderbuch-Illustration, die nur aus Papier besteht. Es ist auch etwas ganz anderes als die modernen Merchandise-Produkte für Kinder, die in der Regel aus Kunststoff bestehen. 🇬🇧 WOOD PICTURE HAPTICS: The special feature of the Mid-Century German Wall Figures era is the fact that they were made of wood. Very thin, but still something solid. That is a big difference to illustrations in children’s books that only consist of paper. The Fairy Tale Wood Pictures were wooden products, that is also the reason that they create this special nostalgic feeling. The old fashioned Brothers Grimm’s “merchandise” did not come in plastic.

INFO – ABGERUNDETE KINDER-HAPTIK: Das Wort Laubsägearbeit kommt tatsächlich von den ersten Formen dieser Arbeiten im 19. Jahrhundert, es waren oft Blätter mit zackigen Rändern, auch innen filigran ausgesägt. Das war nichts für Kinderhände! Die frühen Märchen-Holzbilder waren auch häufig noch filigran, aber später wurden die Figuren immer griffiger, mit abgerundeten Seiten, ohne Innen-Ausschnitte. Am schönsten liegen wohl die späten Ravi-Kunst-Figuren in der Hand, zumal die Oberfläche so schön glatt ist – das lag an der Handbemalung mit der dicken Lackschicht! 

🇬🇧 INFO – ROUNDED CHILDREN’S HAPTICS: The English word “fretwork” seems to stem from the difficult intricate work you had to invest. In German the word for “fretwork” is “Laubsaegearbeit” which translates to “foliage work / task”. The very first fretwork motives in the 19th century were indeed very delicate, very filigrane, outside and inside. The first German Wall Figures were still rather filigrane work, with parts that could break off easily (and did, too). All of those Wood Pictures became sturdier over the decades with more rounded sides. Better for children’s hands, they were toys after all. The best haptics had the later decades’ Ravi-Kunst figures, also because of their smooth surface: Still hand-painted and with glossy finish. (4/4)

SIEBDRUCKRÄTSEL: Zunächst muss man wissen, dass Ravi-Kunst immer handbemalt hat. Ingeborg Wigger, die Nichte von Erna Rath, ist absolut sicher, dass ihre Tante niemals zum Siebdruck übergegangen war, auch nicht, nachdem die Mitgründerin Lisa Viertel den gemeinsamen Betrieb verlassen hatte (1960er). Wie kann es aber sein, dass im Nachlass von Lisa Viertel dennoch Siebdruck-Figuren gefunden wurden, und zwar ein Hampelmann der Hamburger Firma “HaHa” und einige Mini-Figuren? Es könnte Zufall gewesen sein, doch dann geschah Folgendes: Im Internet sah ich ein Hampelmann-Mädchen, bei dem ich sofort den Stil von Lisa Viertel erkannte. Als ich die Rückseite las, stand dort tatsächlich wieder der Hersteller HaHa! Jetzt gibt es zwei Möglichkeiten: zum einen, dass Lisa Viertel auf der Suche nach einer neuen Tätigkeit tatsächlich erst einmal in ihrem vertrauten Tätigkeitsbereich blieb und für HaHa arbeitete. Die zweite Möglichkeit ist, dass Erna Rath und Lisa Viertel noch gemeinsam Entwürfe für HaHa gemacht hatten und Erna Rath dies später allein fortführte. Dafür spricht auch, dass die meisten HaHa-Motive eher dem Stil von Erna Rath ähneln und dass Ravi-Kunst schon früher häufig Aufträge von anderen Firmen angenommen hatte, vor allem Illustrationen für Werbung und Zeitschriften.

🇬🇧 SCREEN-PRINTING MYSTERY: First you have to know that Ravi-Kunst always hand-painted! Borgi Wigger, the niece of Erna Rath, was absolutely sure that her aunt never changed to screen-printing, not even when Lisa Viertel had left the once commonly led manufacture in the early 1960s. But how can it be that screen-printed wood plaques were found in Lisa Viertel’s cellar after her death? It was a jumping jack by another Hamburg manufacturer called “HaHa” and some mini figures. It might have been coincidence, but then the following happened: I discovered an unknown jumping jack girl in the internet where I immediately recognized the style of Lisa Viertel. A glance at the back told me it was actually the producer “HaHa” again! Now there were two possibilities: on her search for a new job Lisa Viertel might have stayed in her former metier for a short while, that she worked for HaHa. The second guess is that Erna Rath and Lisa Viertel had actually made designs for Haha during the time they still worked together and that Erna Rath later continued doing this on her own. That’s actually quite possible because of the design of most HaHa figures that bear the style of Erna Rath’s and because of the fact that Ravi-Kunst had made illustrations for others (especially for advertising and women’s magazines) since their beginning in the 1940s. MESSE-ZWERG: Der jonglierende Zwerg war lange das Markenzeichen von Ravi-Kunst. Als Stempel zierte er alle Rückseiten der 50er Jahre. Es gab ihn auch als großes Holzbild-Logo, das im Atelier Hopfensack 6 im Fenster hing. Zu den Spielzeugmessen wurde der Zwerg abgenommen, damit er den Ravi-Stand zieren konnte. Geerbt hat ihn Ingeborg “Borgi” Wigger, die geliebte Nichte von Erna Rath. 

🇬🇧 TOY FAIR DWARF: The Juggling Dwarf was stamped on the back of every Ravi wood product in the 1950s. There was also a large wood plaque version, specially made to hang in the window of the Ravi-Kunst studio in Hamburg Hopfensack 6. Erna Rath and Lisa Viertel also took him to every toy fair as their signature figure. After Erna Rath’s death, it was given to her beloved niece, Ingeborg “Borgi” Wigger (12/3)

ÜBER RAVI-KUNST: Diese Kunstgewerbe-Manufaktur existierte von 1940 bis ca. 1975, also etwa 35 Jahre lang. Die Hamburger Firma wurde tatsächlich mitten im 2. Weltkrieg gegründet, es war eine mutige Frauen-Gründung von Erna Rath und Lisa Viertel, beide jung, begeistert und begabt. Aus der Kriegsgründung wurde eine Lebensgrundlage für mehrere Jahrzehnte und es entstanden Tausende von wunderschönen Märchen-Holzbildern, meist als Kinderzimmer-Dekoration, alle handbemalt. Der Firmenname setzt sich aus den Nachnamen zusammen: Ra+Vi = Ravi! 🇬🇧 ÜBER RAVI-KUNST: This manufacturer existed from 1940 to around 1975, about 35 years long. The wood art studio was actually founded in 1940, in the middle of the Second World War, by Erna Rath and Lisa Viertel. Those talented and brave woman founders created themselves a living for several decades and designed thousands of beautiful fairy tale wood plaques (Vintage German nursery decoration), all of them hand-painted. From their surnames they created their company’s name: Ra+Vi = Ravi!
