INFO Märchen-Holzbilder / Manufakturen / Handi: Dieser Hersteller hat vermutlich in den 1930er Jahren Kinder-Wandfiguren produziert. Im Deutschen ist der Name inzwischen, fast 100 Jahre später, sehr lustig, denn er sieht fast aus wie das deutsche Wort “Handy”, also Mobiltelefon. Im Englischen merkt man das nicht, denn “handy” bedeutet im Englischen einfach nur “praktisch”. Mobiltelefone hingegen heißen im Englischen “cell phone” oder “mobile phone”; in der Kurzversion einfach nur “cell” or “mobile”. Die Holzbilder von Handi findet man nur selten, ich kenne bisher lediglich eine Handvoll Zwerge. Der schönste ist ein grimmiger Nikolaus mit einem großen Sack und einem Apfel in der Hand. In German, this name is now funny, because almost 100 years later, it looks very much like the German word “Handy”, which is the Germany term for cell phone or mobile phone. You don’t notice this in English, because in English „handy“ simply means „practical“. The German “Handy” is called “cell phone” or “mobile phone” in English. The old wood pictures by Handi’s are very rare to find; so far I’ve only known a handful of dwarves. The most beautiful one is a grim Santa Claus with a big sack and an apple in his hand.
