MERTENS HAMPELMANN-COUP: Man muss zunächst wissen, dass Anfang der 1960er Jahre immer noch “Original Bergischer Engel” der Hampelmann-Marktführer war. Dann passierten zwei Dinge gleichzeitig: Johanna Gruner-Witkop, die Besitzerin des OBE, wollte ihren Betrieb aufgeben und Alfred Mertens und sein Sohn Reiner Mertens wollten in das Hampelmann-Geschäft einsteigen. Frau Gruner-Witkop verkaufte also alle Rechte und Maschinen des OBE mitsamt den wichtigen Produktionsgeheimnissen an Mertens. So kam es, dass die allergrößte Anzahl an verkauften Hampelmännern im letzten Jahrhundert tatsächlich von Mertens-Kunst stammt.

🇬🇧 MERTENS JUMPING JACK COUP: To understand the importance of this you first have to know that at the beginning of the 1960s the manufacture “Original Bergischer Engel” was the market leader of wooden pull figure toys. Then two things happened at the same time: Johanna Gruner-Witkop, the owner of the OBE wanted to sell her company while Alfred Mertens wanted to get into the jumping jack business. Reiner Mertens, the son of Alfred Mertens negotiated with Johanna Gruner-Witkop and all the rights and equipment of the Original Bergischer Engel along with valuable production secrets went to Mertens. How successful? Looking back from the 2020s, the highest numbers of sold wooden jumping jack figures was actually achieved by Mertens-Kunst. (12/3)
