INFO Motive / Tischlein deck dich: Das Brüder-Grimm-Märchen „Tischlein deck dich, Goldesel und Knüppel aus dem Sack” (KHM36) bedient drei menschliche Grundbedürfnisse. Alle drei ergeben, was jeder sich wünscht: 1. Immer genug zu Essen (der Tisch) 2. Immer genug Geld (der Goldesel) 3. Immer genug Schutz gegen böse Menschen (der Knüppel aus dem Sack.) Die Märchen-Holzbilder aus dem letzten Jahrhundert zeigen dieses Motiv eher selten. Heller hat allerdings gleich zwei Figuren dazu entworfen: Auf beiden sieht man den ältesten Schneider-Sohn, aber nur auf einem der beiden Tischchen steht eine Weinflasche, und zwar bei der späteren Variante.

🇬🇧 Motives / The Wishing Table: This a Brothers Grimm’s fairy tale. This is the whole title: “The Wishing-Table, The Gold-Ass and The Cudgel in the Sack”. It’s really about three human yearnings that everybody has: 1. Always enough food (the table) 2. Always enough money (the Gold-Ass) 3. Always protection against bad people (the cudgel). There are not many last century wood plaques with this motive, but Heller did two where you see the Wishing-Table: Both show the delighted tailor’s son, but only one motive has a wine bottle: It’s the later version.
