1930s Niedersachsen: Hansel and Gretel with Frightened Eyes

Handgemalt auf Schichtholz. Every time had their very own Hansel and Gretel faces. Even before the beginning of the Second World War the early German 1930s were overshadowed by Hitler’s seizure of power (1933). Many people were afraid to say what they were thinking. For artists it was safe to show the fear on Hansel and Gretel’s faces – it was only the witch, right? I wish I could ask the artist who designed this Wall Figure.
