1950s VEB Olbernhau ✧ Brave Little Tailor with Scissors and Yellow Base (GDR)

This wall figure is a copy of the original version by Mertens-Kunst. My guess is that the heavy copying began with the GDR having taken over the private wood picture manufactories, especially Edelholz Freiberg. This is Edelholz Freiberg style and paint and quality, showing not Edelholz Freiberg’s original designs but copies of West German wood picture designers. After all – who would sue a communist country because of copyright issues? Obviously back then the GDR did what they wanted to – until 1989, when the Berlin Wall fell.
